Standing Still

I've needed to blog for a while now, but every time I get ready or find some time, I choose to spend my time on other things. While I was living in the small town of Whitewood, SD I got the idea to start doing some photography there. It's about an hour from Rapid, a much bigger city and I thought it would be a way for me to get some experience while providing the town with someone local to take family photos. For whatever reason, that never got anywhere farther than my brain. I was able to do some maternity pictures for my sister-in-law.
After moving back to Kentucky I soon got one job for a family that lives in my apartment complex and had high hopes that I would be able to get something started here. I have only done one other session since then for my little cousin where we did some Christmas pictures. I was very pleased with both sessions, and hopefully will be able to do some more this spring.

Outdoor shots are definitely easier than indoor considering lighting and space. I now use the camera on Manual, rather than Auto, which makes me feel like I've accomplished something. I'm still learning about my camera, but have fallen in love with my new lens I got a few months ago. When doing the shoots, I don't focus much on the posed pictures, but more on the natural ones. Yes, I have an idea of what I want and who I want with whom, but I more than anything just go with the flow of the family or the child. With that comes a happy kid and some great images. That is how I came up with the name StandingStill: the object, (usually a person) for that one particular moment, is standing still in time and I am able to capture that one moment with the camera to freeze forever. Here are just a few of my favorites from those two sessions.
